Following her appointment as head coach of Nigeria's women's basketball team, D'Tigress, in June 2023, Wakama has gained significant attention and coached the Nigeria women's basketball team to unimaginable success in international competitions.

Rene Wakama was named the best coach of the Paris 2024 olympics, she was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and her early experiences as a player shaped her path to becoming a top basketball coach. In the US, she attended college basketball to improve her talents and gain an extensive knowledge of the sport. Her move into coaching was made possible by this starting point, and she has since achieved impressive progress in that profession.

D’Tigress was led by Rene Wakama to unprecedented triumphs at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Under her leadership, Nigeria pulled off a surprising upset to overcome world-ranked Australia in their first-ever Olympic basketball contest.

Following this triumph, Nigeria achieved an even more spectacular victory over Canada, ranked fifth in the world, guaranteeing their spot in the quarterfinals for the first time. D’Tigress became the first team from Africa male or female to get to the Olympic basketball tournament’s quarterfinals with this accomplishment.

Even though the squad got knocked out by the US in the quarterfinals, Rene Wakama’s inspirational leadership and tactical brilliance were highly commended for their performance in the tournament. The International Basketball Federation, or FIBA, named her the 2024 Olympic best coach. This acknowledgment is a tremendous accomplishment for Rene Wakama, Nigeria, and African basketball in general.

Beyond the Olympics, Rene Wakama has had a lasting influence on basketball in Nigeria. Shortly after being appointed, in August 2023, she coached D’Tigress to the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship title, as they defeated Senegal 84-74 in the championship game. Nigeria’s victory cemented the team’s dominance in African women’s basketball and marked their fourth consecutive AfroBasket title.
