Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) had an attempted hacking incident on its official website. Services on the website were briefly interrupted by the attempted hack, which happened soon after the bank renewed its domain name. Customers and the media expressed worry after Rumors claimed hackers had copied the website and stolen user information.
It has been made clear by GTBank that, despite a single isolated attempt to compromise its website domain, no client data was compromised and the website was not replicated. To reduce the possibility of data theft from this occurrence, the bank made it clear that it does not save customer information on its website.
Guaranty Trust Bank has indicated that the information and security experts are working to restore the domain settings and ensure the full functionality of the website.
On August 15, 2024, Guaranty Trust Bank released an official statement in reaction to the hacking event. Customers were reassured that their data was not compromised by the statement, which also addressed the media reports and provided clarification.

Speculations from many Web Developers and Cybersecurity experts say that the Domain name was either not renewed on time which could be blamed on the Bank’s IT department or hackers wanted to hijack the ownership abruptly.
Most Domain name registrars will give you a 30-90 day notice before the website name expires which buys you enough time to renew if you still need the Domain name.
According to the information available to the public, the domain name GTbank.com was registered on March 21st, 2002, and expires on March 21st, 2029. However, the information also indicates that the domain renewal was updated on August 13th, 2024.
This proves that the domain name was renewed just 2 days before the expiry date which must have permitted the Registrar (register.com) to display parked ads on the website.
This sent Guaranty Trust bank users in despair as they feared that their assets and digital information would be stolen by the perceived hackers.
Furthermore, to solidify this claim, no hacker or group has come forth to claim responsibility for the Act.
