CAF committee Libya fined $50,0000 and lose 3 points to Nigeria

Libya football federation has been handed a fine of $50,000 after investigations were carried out by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the unjust treatment of the Nigerian super eagles who visited Libya for the second leg of the 2024/2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The second leg qualifiers were cancelled after the super eagles were delayed at the an abandoned airport for 14 hours without food or water.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) created a committee to investigate the complaints and petition filed against the Libya football federation by the Nigerian football federation (NFF).

Following an investigation of the event, CAF determined that Libya’s conduct violated Articles 31, 82, and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, which mandate that all host teams provide the safety and appropriate lodgings of visiting teams.

The committee has handed a fine of $50,000 to the Libya football federation for the harsh treatment unleashed on the super eagles.

The super eagles has been awarded the 3 point for the cancelled leg qualifiers  keeping them above the group table. CAF has requested that the penalized amount be paid within 60 days.

In response to the CAF’s decision, the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) denied any deliberate wrongdoing during the Super Eagles’ airport experience.

The Nigerian team’s rerouting to Al-Abraq International Airport and the ensuing 20-hour wait were regrettable events, but they were not intentional, they said, adding that the lengthy incarceration and logistical problems were not planned.

Despite these justifications, CAF stuck to its decision, rejecting Libya’s appeal and reiterating that the AFCON procedure infringement justified the $50,000 fine and the loss of three points.
